Warm greetings to everybody attending this year’s China Development Forum!

HSBC has been a proud partner of CDF since the very start and it’s always a highlight in our year.

I’m excited to be joining you again in 2021 and I look forward to the many important discussions that we’ll have over the coming days.

We are meeting on the back of an extremely tough year and I have three reflections that I’d like to share.

First, the adversity we faced as individuals and as a society helped us focus on what’s really important.

I saw it in the way that communities rallied together. I saw it in the way that my colleagues supported each other to balance the many competing commitments they had to juggle. And I saw it in the unbelievable dedication they showed on behalf of our customers who were hurting badly.

They moved mountains and I found it personally incredibly humbling.

Second, it proved what we can achieve if we work together in a single-minded way.

I saw that within HSBC, where my colleagues rallied to overcome obstacles like never before.

But I also saw it in the international scientific response to Covid-19 which delivered an incredible outcome quickly and collaboratively.

The vaccine programs rolling out across the world are a triumph of collective ambition and of our collective ability to overcome even the toughest challenges before us.

Third, it reminded us that this is a small world and that our collective challenges are much bigger than any business, industry or country.

Covid-19 is not the last global challenge we face or possibly the greatest.

If Covid-19 was a wake-up call a climate crisis could be much, much worse.

But if anything, our experiences in 2020 and the growing climate commitments made by businesses and governments (such as China) give me hope that we can change our economy to build a more sustainable and prosperous world.

Since HSBC made its own net-zero commitment in October last year, I’ve been genuinely heartened by the response from our customers, colleagues and investors.

And we are committed to working with all our clients to accelerate the low carbon transition in a just and responsible way.

I’m genuinely optimistic for the future.

The many vaccines being deployed suggest better times ahead. A call-to-action on the future of our planet is being answered by individuals, businesses and governments. And the rise of new industries and technologies creates opportunities for people to manage their lives, work and their finances in new and exciting ways.

China is at the forefront of all these things and the ambitions of the 14th Five Year Plan will only strengthen that position.

We’re excited to play our part in achieving those ambitions through our investment in China, through the connections we provide between China and the rest of the world and through our participation at this year’s China Development Forum.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Thank you!
