COVID-19 Fuels Expansion of Chinese Public Medical Infrastructure

The COVID epidemic has compelled the Chinese government to reform its medical system. As a result, public hospitals jump at this valuable expansion opportunity, and in various places, there has been a high enthusiasm for investing in public medical infrastructure. For example, the Wuhan government plans to build 11 new public general hospitals. At the same time, Kunming plans to build 13 hospitals within the year, with a total investment of more than 12 billion yuan. Ambitious plans to build hospitals are also seen on the east coast.

However, with the large-scale expansion, those local public hospitals face many difficulties and challenges. First of all, many hospitals, including large and renowned ones, are struggling to make ends meet. New expansion will bring new expenses and debts. In addition, if the impact of the epidemic cannot be overcome as soon as possible and further development is achieved, those newly established public hospitals will have severe liquidity problems.

Major Floods Threatening Yingde, A City of South China’s Guangdong Province

Recently, a heavy flood occurred in Yingde, Guangdong. Yingde is located in the middle and upper reaches of the Northern River. According to public information, under the influence of persistent heavy rainfall in the past few days, Yingde is facing serious threats of major floods. Under normal circumstances, when rapid water catchment meets high-intensity, long-term downpours, it is easy to develop into a serious flood disaster.

The core cause of the floods was excessive rainfall. Whether the flood will spread to the cities in the lower reaches of the Northern River mainly depends on the weather conditions in coming days. If the rainfall continues further, it cannot be ruled out that the Pearl River Basin will have a major flood. Local government in Guangdong is doing its best to strengthen flood monitoring and flood control. Currently, the flood control situation in Yingde area is extremely severe and complex. In the meantime, Guangdong’s neighboring provinces have also witnessed continuous rainfall.

Depositors Left in Dark As Some Henan Local Banks Freeze Their Lifetime Savings

Since late April, some depositors have found that their deposits in four regional banks in Henan cannot be withdrawn through online channels. The banks claimed “systems were being upgraded”. But depositors can’t withdraw their money when they went to offline branches of those banks. After two months, the depositors are deeply worried and they are trying everything to retrieve their funds. As the police revealed the latest information, savers came to know that the crisis was initiated by the Henan New Fortune Group, which is suspected of major crimes.

The police have found out that since 2011, a criminal gang headed by the company’s actual controller, Lu, have been suspected of using local banks to commit a series of crimes. Police have begun investigating this group, and the process of recovering deposits and returning them to depositors will be painful and lengthy. Whether depositors’ funds entered the banking system is also a key to whether these money can be finally retrieved.

China’s College Graduates Flocking to Seek Job Opportunities in Civil Service

A Peking University doctoral graduate, admitted as a civil servant in Chaoyang District, Beijing, will become a member of city management law enforcement. In mid-April, the above-mentioned information was disclosed by Chaoyang District in a list of prospective recruits. This list shows that most of the applicants are masters who graduated from famous universities. Such a position would not have been a dream job for new college grads. But nowadays, after graduating from prestigious schools, it seems that more and more young people are seeking for civil service jobs. This shows that the trend of career expectations for new grads are fundamentally changing.

In economically developed areas, or in less developed central and western regions and remote towns many graduate students have entered the ranks of civil servants. It seems that civil service jobs are becoming increasingly popular among new job seekers with college degrees.
