Heaviest Downpour in Decades Floods Northern China, Battering Beijing with Record Flooding
Hit by the remnants of super storm Doksuri, extreme heavy rainfall occurred in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and other places. In some areas, the intensity of downpour exceeded the three extreme torrential rains in the history of Northern China.
Days of heavy rainfall battered Beijing triggering landslides and floods. As the duration of rainfall reached 83 hours, thousands of people had been evacuated from the city. At the same time, fatalities were reported. The torrential rain also caused floods in many places, especially in mountainous areas such as Fangshan District and Mentougou District in Beijing, and Zhuozhou City in Hebei Province. The flood also exposed that the current urban infrastructure still has certain vulnerabilities. In an interview with a reporter from Caijing, an expert said that while repairing and restoring infrastructure as soon as possible, it is necessary for the local authorities to think about how to improve the resilience of infrastructure in the face of extreme weather events.
